On Christ The Solid Rock I Stand | August 4th:
Born to pub-owning parents in 1797, Edward Mote grew up without knowledge of the Bible or God's mercy. However, at his boss's invitation, who trained him to be a cabinetmaker, Mote attended a service at Tottenham Court Road Chapel, where he heard the Gospel and came to faith in Christ. Mote continued to work hard and later established his own successful cabinetry business. Later, he became a pastor and developed a great love for hymns. According to Hymncharts, one morning in 1834, as Mote was walking to his workshop in Holborn, London, the words of a chorus came to his mind: "On Christ the Solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand."
By the end of the day, he had penned four verses of what would become one of the most cherished hymns of all time. The following Sunday, Mote visited a friend's sick wife. They planned to sing and pray, but upon reaching for his hymnal, Mote realized he had left it at home. So he pulled out the verses from that song he had just started writing. The words comforted the sick woman, leading Mote to pen two more stanzas.
"My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus' name
On Christ the solid Rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand
When darkness veils His lovely face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil
His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood
When all around my soul gives way
He then is all my hope and stay
When He shall come with trumpet sound
O may I then in Him be found
Dressed in His righteousness alone
Faultless to stand before the throne."
Mote's lyrics were undoubtedly inspired by Scripture, which describes God as an immovable rock (Isaiah 26:4) in the Old Testament and declares that Jesus is that rock in the New Testament.

Matthew 7:24-25 says, “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock."
