Maintain An Active Church Membership | Sunday, January 21, 2024
A study published by Yahoo Finance found that Americans squandered $397 million on abandoned gym memberships last year.
The gym isn't the only place memberships are wasting away from non-use. It may not be a treadmill or an abs machine, but the church has empty pews and volunteer opportunities. Like the gym, there are "hot seasons" for church membership. Typically, holidays, national troubles, or targeted events bring people to the church, but God's house was meant for so much more than "convenient drop-ins."
See, we need to be like the Psalmist, who in Psalm 84:10 says, "For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness."
You can relate God's courts to church today. When you are in God's courts, you are in His house. Yes, you can pray and seek God anywhere, but He has set aside the church to be a place of reverence and reflection in His infinite wisdom. Minimizing the church's role in your life is a tremendous oversight. Again, if we limit church to weddings, funerals, seasonal visits, or sacramental gatherings, we rob ourselves of potential spiritual blessings and will risk disobeying God.
Notice also that the Psalmist said that one day in God's courts was better than a thousand days elsewhere! Sometimes, people think they will miss out on life if they attend church regularly. Let me flip that around for you: don't worry about missing out on what the world offers; be more concerned about missing what God has for you. One day with God in His courts is better than anything else you could imagine.
Finally, the Psalmist attached serving to being in God's courts. Church attendance is okay at first, but eventually, you want to get involved. Even coming early to pray for the service or at home is a tangible way to help.
Knowing this, don't waste your church membership. God has blessings for you to receive and to use as you maintain an active church membership.
