Praying Mothers

Praying Mothers | Sunday, May 12, 2024

Parents, particularly mothers, can sometimes feel their guidance and efforts go unnoticed, especially when those actions involve prayer. However, a praying mother is a powerful force! American President Theodore Roosevelt profoundly said, "Praying mothers are America's greatest assets."

In the story of Hannah, we find an example of a mother offering righteous prayers. According to Scripture, Hannah was barren, which attracted a lot of gossip and social ridicule during her time. Nevertheless, Hannah prayed and trusted in God's faithfulness, and she was blessed with her son Samuel, who went on to serve the Lord as one of the most influential leaders in Israel. After his birth, Hannah prayed again:

" ‘I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life, he will be given over to the Lord.’ " And he worshipped the Lord there." (First Samuel 1:27-28)

Hannah's narrative isn't limited to mothers expecting a child or small children. For example, Luke 7:11-17 tells of a mother's story, which provides an indispensable reminder that God hears a mother's prayers in anguish and crisis. The Lord was deeply moved by the grief of a widowed mother in Nain whose only son passed on. No doubt her prayers for comfort were answered.

Like Hannah, let us bring our hearts' cries to the Lord, especially concerning our children. Pray for their safety, salvation, and steadfastness in the Lord.
