Getting Into A Peaceful State Of Mind

Getting Into A Peaceful State Of Mind | July 18th

We live in a world filled with problems and pain. Jesus warned us about this reality in John 16:33: "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

We are confronted with the actuality of trouble daily. Abortion, addiction, bankruptcy, job loss, divorce, crime, illness, death, hospitals, prisons, war, and the list sadly goes on! Also, the news loves to sensationalize natural disasters, political divisions, violence, and tragedies. You couldn't get away from the negativity if you tried.

Thus, you must apply the other essential portions of Jesus' message. He has told us that we can overcome the world's negativity not by pretending it doesn't exist but by accepting the peace of mind He has graciously promised. Here are a few important facts concerning this blessing: Jesus' gift of peace differs from what the world offers. John 14:27, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid."

The world and some expressions of Christianity try to push positive thinking as a means of being happy. However, being positive is contingent upon yourself in that form of thinking. In comparison, God's promise of peace depends on Christ, who gives a legitimate, lasting, and positive mindset in the long run. His peace transforms our minds and hearts.
You can trust this gift of peace because Jesus is the source of it. Jesus backs the peace promised in the Bible. Isaiah 9:6 identifies Jesus as the Prince of Peace. In the book of Philippians, the Apostle Paul ties our ability to overcome anxiety and stress to God's promise of peace. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7

Disappointment and despair fill this world, but Christians can have peace by focusing on God's promises. Romans 15:13, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope."
