Carry One Another
Carry One Another | June 19, 2024
There was a tribe of Indians who lived a long time ago in Mississippi. They lived next to a very swift and dangerous river. The current was so strong that it could sweep away anyone who happened to fall or stumble into it.
One day, the tribe was attacked by a hostile group of settlers. They found themselves with their backs against the river. Since they were outnumbered, their only chance for escape was to cross the rushing river. They huddled together, and those who were strong picked up and carried the weak and put them on their shoulders—the little children, the sick, the old and the infirm, and those who were ill or wounded. They waded into the river, and to their surprise, they discovered that the weight on their shoulders, carrying the least and the lowest, helped them keep their footing and make it safely across the river. Those who decided not to help others had difficulty navigating the rough waters, and some succumbed.
As we know, God's ways are not our ways. What may seem like a burden is a blessing in disguise. God will often allow obstacles in the form of people and problems to give us an opportunity for greater obedience. See, we can trust God, but the better question is, can God trust us? Are we trustworthy with more responsibility and prosperity? We can't expect God to increase our bandwidth if we are consumed with ourselves.
Like those tribal members who decided to carry their friends who needed help, we are better together, especially when we focus on lending a hand to others. Living this way honors God as well. Galatians 6:2 says, "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ."
People often ask themselves, "What is God's will for my life?" Generally speaking, God's will is for His children to be unselfish. As we seek to be benevolent, generous, hospitable, and kind, doors will open, and spiritual understanding will come. When prompted by the Spirit, the key is to carry the person in need!
