God Is Our Mighty Fortress

God Is Our Mighty Fortress  | June 18, 2024

Some of the most well-known fortresses in world history include the walls of Constantinople, Hadrian's Wall in England, and the Masada in Israel. However, the fortification that needs no introduction is the Great Wall of China. Measured at a staggering 13 thousand miles long, 25 feet high, and 15-30 feet thick, this stronghold of a wall sounds impenetrable! Yet, history and current events say otherwise for the Great Wall of China and the other extraordinary partitions on the list. Although the walls were massive, they did not guarantee protection from the enemy.

Thankfully, God is a mighty fortress that has and will always provide an indomitable refuge! Psalm 46:1 assures us, "God is our mighty fortress, always ready to help in times of trouble." This verse has encouraged countless missionaries serving in hostile nations, those afflicted with severe disease, impoverished villages, and numerous people to take steps of faith. Martin Luther, the reformer, was so moved by this verse that he penned the timeless hymn, "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," in 1527. The hymn would become the "Battle Song" for the Protestant Reformation.

If we want to see a significant transformation in our lives, homes, and nation, we must also trust God to be our mighty fortress. That means God, the Bible, prayer, and the church need to be more than religious relics we look to for luck. If you were researching the Great Wall of China today, you would find it is more of a monument than a fortress.

Let that not be said of our faith! May we never reduce the promises of God to a memorial we visit occasionally.  God is a mighty fortress we can trust in times of great trials and troubles.
