God's Cover 4 Defense

God's Cover 4 Defense | October 8, 2023

Although offense and high-scoring teams garner the most attention in football from fans, a creative defensive plan can impact the game just as much, if not more. A favored defense that many teams use at all levels of tackle football is the Cover 4 Defense. This defensive scheme was conceived in the 1940s by Oklahoma Sooners Coach Bud Wilkinson and can be described in the following way: Cover 4 is primarily a zone defense with two cornerbacks and two safeties that cover the deep zones. Linebackers typically cover the underneath zones. The main objective of the coverage is to prevent having a deep ball thrown over the top of the defense for a big strike or score. Yet, the safeties remain close to the line of scrimmage to also help defend the run if the opposing team doesn't pass on that down. Coaches are trying to blanket the field on this coverage.

‌Even with good players and hours of practice, the Cover 4 can yield points. See, the best coaches only assume and estimate what the other team will do. However, our heavenly Father doesn't need to guess because He already knows what the adversary will attempt. Thus, our job is to trust the Lord's defensive plan, knowing nothing can occur outside His knowledge.

‌Remember, God has an unstoppable defensive game plan. His coverage for you is impenetrable and undefeated. Much of the ancient historical record of God's relationship with His people concerns His faithful provision of covering. Perhaps the most prominent example the Scripture repeatedly revisits is God's covering of the Israelites in connection with their deliverance from Egyptian bondage. Psalm 105:39 says, "The Lord spread a cloud above them as a covering and gave them a great fire to light the darkness."

‌Just as He covered the Israelites, He will protect you. Therefore, don't worry about what the enemy is doing. You can trust God's "cover defense" of your life.

‌Psalm 91:4 declares, "He will cover you with his feathers; you will take refuge under his wings. His faithfulness will be a protective shield."
