Little Light Of Mine
Little Light Of Mine | August 19, 2023
We can learn much from the well-known children's song "This Little Light of Mine." Here are the lyrics, and feel free to sing along:
"This little light of mine, I'm gonna' let it shine. This little light of mine, I'm gonna' let it shine. This little light of mine, I'm gonna' let it shine. Let it shine all the time; let it shine. Hide it under a bushel? NO! I'm gonna' let it shine. Hide it under a bushel? NO! I'm gonna' let it shine. Hide it under a bushel? NO! I'm gonna' let it shine. Let it shine all the time let it shine. Won't let Satan, Whoof it out! I'm gonna' let it shine. No, Won't let Satan, Whoof it out! I'm gonna' let it shine. Won't let Satan, Whoof it out! I'm gonna' let it shine. Let it shine all the time; let it shine."
There are several practical encouragements and reminders in this sweet little song:
1. As a believer in Christ, you are responsible for shining your light to honor God and help others. Notice that it's not about us but about God's renown. That is why there is no place in our lives or the church for arrogant agendas or boasting.
2. Our enemy, the devil, wants nothing but to rob us of this purpose. With craftiness and deception, he will get you to cover your light with temptations to neglect your relationship with God and to make sin acceptable.
3. We need to stand firm against such attempts.
4. The song ends with an ongoing declaration to "let it shine." We need to make this a regular part of our day, prayerfully seeking to shine the light of our faith. We do this with humility and sensitivity to the Spirit's leading. Notice that the song doesn't say to be obnoxious or judgmental.
Knowing this, let us carry out the command of Christ found in Matthew 5:14-16 which says, "You are the world's light—a city on a hill, glowing in the night for all to see. Don't hide your light! Let it shine for all; let your good deeds glow for all to see so that they will praise your heavenly Father."
