Cost of Baptism

Cost of Baptism | August 2, 2025
A family had recently relocated and sought a church to attend. The family also wanted to take the step of believer's baptism. After a few weeks of visiting churches, they inquired about baptism. Much to their surprise, the family was told that baptism cost $250 per adult and $150 per child. The fee could be reduced if the family became members of the church!
While this is not common, some churches and denominations charge or strongly suggest a donation for baptism. These practices are not only frowned upon but also confusing for newcomers to baptism. Sadly, some have turned sacramental and spiritual growth steps into a transaction or commission for the church. Thankfully, there is no monetary cost or any religious hoops to jump through that are associated with baptism in the Scriptures. See, the real cost was placed upon the shoulders of Christ. By going to the cross, shedding His blood for our sins, and defeating death, Jesus paid for not only our salvation but also our baptism. Therefore, the requirements for baptism are unrelated to money or specific religious rules. Instead, baptism begins with a response to the Gospel and a relationship with Christ.
The book of Acts recounts Peter's first sermon, delivered on the Day of Pentecost. In this sermon, he testified about the mercy God had shown him and clearly shared the message of the Gospel. The impact of his message was so profound that it prompted a significant question from the crowd, as recorded in Acts 2:37, "When they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, ‘Brothers, what should we do?’ Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit’ " (Acts 2:38).
Notice that baptism is in recognition of the grace and forgiveness God has already provided. Therefore, baptism doesn't save you or exempt you from sin. Instead, it demonstrates that you are a believer, understand the Gospel message of the cross, and willingly seek to follow Christ.
Remember, Christ has paid the cost of baptism in full.
