Teamwork Makes The Mission Work

Teamwork Makes The Mission Work | February 8, 2026

Whether you like American football or not, you are most likely familiar with the NFL's Super Bowl Game that will air today. While the NFL has become increasingly inconsistent in its social justice positions, what hasn't changed is the fact that every team begins the season with a single mission in mind: to win its last game, which is the Super Bowl.

Although that mission is commendable, achieving it is impossible without embracing teamwork. No single player can win the game on their own. There are 53 active players, with about 48 of them dressed and ready for the big game today. For a team to be successful, it needs to excel in all three phases of football: Offense, Defense, and Special Teams. Any good coach will have coaches and players who fit that mission of winning. Sports are more about a culture than anything else.

To achieve all that God has in store for us, it’s essential to be part of the team He designates. Nehemiah is an excellent example of the importance of teamwork. His plan to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, decimated after the Babylonian attacks, involved collaboration among various groups—priests, rulers, and residents—who worked on sections closest to their homes. This approach fostered shared responsibility and unity, enabling them to complete the monumental project in just 52 days!

Nehemiah 3:1-3 gives us some of those teammates' work when it says, "Then Eliashib the high priest and the other priests started to rebuild at the Sheep Gate. They dedicated it and set up its doors, building the wall as far as the Tower of the Hundred, which they dedicated, and the Tower of Hananel. 2 People from the town of Jericho worked next to them, and beyond them was Zaccur son of Imri. 3 The Fish Gate was built by the sons of Hassenaah."

Nehemiah and his team had a mission to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Similarly, we have a mission to build His kingdom. We need to be part of God's team, which is the church, to accomplish this task effectively.

Consider the prayer Jesus prayed to the Father on our behalf: "As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world" (John 17:18).

Teamwork will make that mission work!
