Pray For God's Covering

Pray For God's Covering | February 5, 2026
One of the most practical and wise prayers you can offer to God is a heartfelt request for His divine protection. Thus, let me be clear: this type of prayer is not merely anecdotal or spiritual hyperbole. On the contrary, praying for God's protection is both theologically sound and follows the example of many of God's chosen servants, particularly the Old Testament leader Nehemiah.
100 years after the time of Babylon and King Nebuchadnezzar's siege of Jerusalem, God stirred Nehemiah's heart to go to the Promised Land and rebuild the walls that had been burned down. In ancient cities, the Walls represented refuge and safety. If there were no walls, the area and the people would be left vulnerable to their adversaries and any emboldened enemy. Despite the danger, Nehemiah was determined to go to Jerusalem, but he first needed his boss's approval, who happened to be King Artaxerxes I of Persia!
Therefore, Nehemiah prayed for God's covering and favor before the meeting. Nehemiah 1:11 says, “Please, Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant and to that of your servants who delight to revere your name. Give your servant success today, and grant him compassion in the presence of this man.”
Nehemiah prayed, "Lord, go before me!" I have personally used this prayer for my family, church services, meetings, messages, and even phone calls. There’s no doubt that we need the Lord's covering and favor. Asking Him to go before us reflects a mindset that acknowledges our need for God's blessing and strength. Furthermore, it shows a humble heart that trusts the Lord for the outcome.
The outcome of Nehemiah's prayers was profound (Nehemiah 2). The meeting resulted in incredible favor, which proved to be a catalyst for Nehemiah as he rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem in just 52 days! We will discuss these results in our next devotional tomorrow.
For today, take a moment to ask God for protection over your plans. Request that He covers you and your family. Humbly seek His guidance before your meetings, doctor's appointments, work shifts, classes, or throughout your day. It is wise and essential to ask the Lord for His provision and protection.
Remember, Psalm 46:1 declares, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble."
May God go before you!
