Getting Out Of A Rut

Getting Out Of A Rut | January 27th

Are the repeated routines of your responsibilities wearing on you? Do you find yourself more combative than cooperative with others? Is your work driving you toward significance or draining your strength? Or is there a transgression that is tarnishing your trust in God? You may be in a rut if you can answer yes to any of those questions!

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a rut is a long, deep track worn by the repeated passage of a vehicle's wheel. However, ruts are not just limited to a physical location in the ground. You can get into a rut with unhealthy eating and poor sleeping habits. You find yourself in a rut with your relationships and with your thinking. You can slide into a rut with reckless spending. You can even fall into a rut with your faith!

To get out of your rut, you need to do the following:
First, remember that nobody knows you better than God. Psalm 139:1-2 says, "O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off."  This means that God is fully aware of you and the internal adversity you’re going through. God has not missed a single thought or idea of your fear or insecurities, yet He still loves you unconditionally. Thus, you can be real with God and trust His care. Ultimately, it will help you identify the root causes of your rut and position you to move forward.

Secondly, recognize the need for a trusted friend or leader. Proverbs 27:17 declares, "As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend." Having accountability in your life is a tremendous tool. Talking with someone who can listen, advise, and pray for you will be an indispensable part of your life. I have enjoyed the support of a few guys, and one in particular, whom I have spoken with weekly for the past 19 years. There is strength in numbers. You need God and His people to help you to get out of your rut.
Finally, replace negative thinking with healthy thinking! Nothing will bury you faster than negativity. Therefore, apply Philippians 4:8 when it says, "Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise."

By God's grace, you will rise from your rut and run the race God has for you.
