Discouragement Is Curable

Discouragement Is Curable | October 21, 2025
According to medical records, there are many incurable diseases. Even with our advanced research and extended reach with technology, some terminal illnesses can only be managed at best.
In many ways, discouragement feels like a disease. Discouragement attacks you first inwardly in your mind and through your emotions, and then outwardly, you begin to see the impact. You feel fatigued, fearful, and like a failure. Your sleeping and eating are adversely affected as well. Before you know it, thoughts of isolation flood your headspace, and there appears to be no hope.
However, unlike some of the more aggressive diseases, discouragement is curable. When I am discouraged, I try first to attack this condition in my mind. Second Corinthians 10:5b says, "...We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." Whether it's a temptation, trouble, tension, or trial, we must bring any discouraging or distracting thoughts to God. We can't dwell on it if they don't comply with our Lord's Will.
Think of this practice as your thought filter. Many of the discouraging things we are thinking about are lies anyway. Sure, there is reason for uneasiness and disheartenment over a bad break, a missed opportunity, or the sentiment of being stuck, but we don't have to feed these feelings with more doom and gloom. We need to turn that around by acknowledging the reality of our pains and believing that God will make a way where there seems to be no way.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
Finally, when I find myself in a season of discouragement, I seek to cast whatever burden I have on the Lord regularly. Psalm 55:22 says, "Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never allow the righteous to be shaken."
If you feel overwhelmed today, consider these verses and cast your cares onto the Lord because He cares for you. And, remember, by God's grace, our discouragement is curable.
