Think Before You Talk

Think Before You Talk | October 29, 2025

Have you ever said something and immediately wished you could take it back? Perhaps your words didn't come out quite right, or your tone was too harsh. Maybe you spoke too soon, without having all the facts. When this happens, you might question your choices with thoughts like: "If only I had waited!" "I should have remained quiet!" "Why didn't I say that differently?" "I wish I could just go back in time!" Hindsight is always 20/20. However, it's important to remember that your reaction shouldn't end with regret.

First, apologize quickly by taking ownership of your mistake. Taking ownership means you shouldn't blame your verbal blunders on someone else or your circumstances because this would negate the apology.

Secondly, you should adopt a new communication method. For example, apologizing while verbally attacking someone later only worsens the situation.

Therefore, take notice of Proverbs 29:20, which says, "Do you see someone who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for someone who speaks without thinking."
This verse suggests that an effective and successful communication strategy starts with thinking before you speak. Consider this: How many conflicts could you avoid by carefully considering your words? How many emotions could you protect from insensitivity or ignorance?

Thinking before you speak can minimize relational damage, reduce drama, and prevent feelings of discouragement.

To navigate sensitive conversations effectively, consider the following questions before responding to others:

Do I have all the facts?
Do I have an ulterior motive?
Is this the right time to speak?
Have I prayed about what I’m going to say?

Additionally, in everyday conversations, it’s wise to adhere to the principle of honoring God and helping others with our words.

In all forms of communication—conflict resolution, confrontation, casual conversation, or offering counsel—we should ask God to guide and protect our words. A humble and beneficial prayer to incorporate into our daily routine is Psalm 141:3: "Lord, set a guard over my mouth; keep watch at the door of my lips."

May God grant us the strength and discipline to consider what He wants us to say before speaking!
