Winning The War Within

Winning The War Within | November 8, 2026

For centuries, the Roman Empire was an unstoppable global superpower known throughout the world. However, historians such as Edward Gibbon have pointed out that Rome didn't fall to barbarian invasions overnight; rather, it decayed from the inside out over several decades.

Internal political corruption, civil wars spurred by rival generals' ambitions, economic greed, and a culture fixated on self-gratification gradually weakened the empire. By the time external tribes invaded, Rome had become a hollow shell of its former self. The internal struggles for power and pleasure had completely drained its strength. They had essentially lost the war within.

Like Rome, we will experience our own internal wars, which will affect our relationships with ourselves, others, and even God. Overcoming these battles requires understanding the root causes of these conflicts and responding to God's guidance with humility.
Thankfully, Scripture provides the counsel we need to win these wars and be useful in God's kingdom plan.

James 4:1-3 says, "What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet, but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures."

Notice that James emphasizes that the problem originates from within, allowing no space for blame-shifting or attributing poor attitudes and actions to circumstances, other people, or even God. If we want to honor the Lord, help others, and reach our full potential in this life, we need to be honest about the origins of our internal struggles.

James identifies the internal struggle we face as a prideful desire to attain what we want, often at any cost. While there is nothing wrong with working hard or improving ourselves through education, training, and trades, pursuing these goals out of selfish ambition and unchecked pride is not supported by God. When we live this way, even our prayers can be affected because we are asking with the wrong motives. Consequently, James connects unhealthy motivations to the conflicts we experience within ourselves.

Understanding this, let us hold ourselves accountable for our struggles and humbly seek to serve God.
