Blessed Are The Peacemakers

Blessed Are The Peacemakers | July 2, 2026

A fierce storm washed away a small wooden bridge connecting two neighboring farms belonging to a father and son. The families, who had previously enjoyed a close relationship, were unable to visit each other. Over time, the lack of visits between father and son led to blame-shifting, misunderstandings developed into resentment, and eventually, their relationship became strained.

One day, a local carpenter was hired—not to build a fence, as one farmer had expected—but instead, he quietly constructed a new bridge across the creek that would allow access once again. When the father saw it, he walked across the bridge, extended his hand to his son, and the two reconciled.

Peacemakers are builders of bridges, not fences. They take the initiative to mend broken relationships rather than deepen divisions.

That is why Jesus said in Matthew 5:9, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God."

When Jesus taught this principle, He primarily focused on reconciling sinners to God. Thus, peacemakers, by way of their words and deeds, try to point others in the direction of having peace with God through a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. They are essentially building that bridge by explaining the truth of Scripture, being a Christlike example, and serving when the opportunity arises.

When we are willing and actively led by the Holy Spirit to help others come to know Christ, we are acting as God's peacemakers. Jesus said that we will be recognized as God's children for this. Being a peacemaker reflects the heart of God, whose desire is for people to reach repentance. As stated in Second Peter 3:9, "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

Every day, we face a choice: to build weak fences that deepen the separation people feel from God or to build strong bridges that bring them closer to the Lord. Building fences can mean talking a good game without truly living out our commitment to Christ. Behaviors such as having a judgmental attitude, lacking forgiveness, being prideful, and leading a life of duplicity are common among those who build fences.

In contrast, bridge builders reflect God's mercy and kindness to others, regardless of the circumstances. They patiently wait for the Spirit's leading to share and provide answers to the hope within them.

The children of God are called to build bridges that help others have peace with God.
