Understanding The Baptism Of The Holy Spirit

Understanding The Baptism Of The Holy Spirit | May 8, 2026

Today's Reading: Acts 1:4-5, "On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: 'Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'"

Earlier in the Gospel of John, Jesus told his disciples that he would send a helper, the Holy Spirit, to be with them forever after his ascension into heaven. To illustrate this unprecedented event, Jesus used the understanding of water baptism to explain His point. Water Baptism is a direct reference to our union with Christ. Likewise, when the Holy Spirit first came upon the disciples, it represented their union in Him. Notice that there were no theatrics or anything wacky.

Thus, the baptism of the Holy Spirit can be understood as the work whereby the Spirit of God places the believer in union with Christ and with other believers in the body of Christ at the moment of salvation. Also note, the baptism of the Holy Spirit was foretold by John the Baptist in Mark 1:8. This promise would ultimately be fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost, recorded in Acts 2:1–4, when, for the first time, people were permanently indwelt by the Holy Spirit, marking the beginning of the church.

Contrary to common misconceptions, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is meant for every believer. There is no special selection or group of believers who are excluded from this gift. When a person places their faith in Christ, God instills the Holy Spirit within them, meaning all believers receive the Holy Spirit.

A key passage in the Bible regarding the baptism of the Holy Spirit is found in 1 Corinthians 12:12-13: "For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, enslaved or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink." It's important to highlight the word "all" in this reference, which indicates that all believers receive the Holy Spirit.
Knowing this, you can live with humble confidence, knowing that God has given you the Holy Spirit, who will provide power, comfort, wisdom, guidance, strength, healing, and conviction.
