Love In Deed And Truth

Love In Deed And Truth | June 12th

One Saturday morning, a young boy noticed that his elderly neighbor struggled to carry groceries from her car into her house. That week, he decided to help her. Without being asked, he ran over, picked up the bags, and carried them inside. The woman smiled warmly and said, “Thank you. Many people say they care, but you have shown it.”
What might have seemed like a simple act of kindness by this kid actually carries a profound spiritual truth: genuine love is more than just words—it is shown through actions. It is easy to speak kindly, make promises, or say we care about others, but true love goes beyond emotion and speech into visible acts of compassion, sacrifice, and service.
Writing to his congregation of followers in Christ, the Apostle John, with decades of experience in serving God, says,  “My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth” (First John 3:18).

Notice the loving manner in which John communicates this essential message. He viewed himself as a fatherly spiritual leader in the lives of those he ministered to, meaning that his message should not be seen as a mere recommendation or suggestion. Instead, John's words should be treated as a command applicable to every true believer. The teachings of active love found in the Scriptures are not optional; they must be met with obedience and action.

It’s important to note that John's teaching doesn't suggest that we not communicate in a loving way. We should always strive to speak life and love into others. However, we shouldn’t stop there. The context reveals that sometimes people may talk about love but fail to back it up with actions that reflect Christ. Examples of living in truth and deed include over 50 "one another" commands in the New Testament, such as serving one another, praying for one another, encouraging one another, and forgiving one another.
The major obstacle we face in fulfilling these commands is that we often rely on our own truth rather than God's truth. When we do this, the outcome tends to be deeds driven by selfishness and pride.

Therefore, let us align our attitudes with the Lord, and our actions will follow. We must move from words to the active application of what God has willed for us to do, which is to love in deed and truth.
