Renovating Your Mind

Renovating Your Mind | January 11, 2026

Studies from Harvard's Joint Center for Housing, Yahoo Finance, NerdWallet, and the University of South Alabama indicate that Americans spent between $500 and $600 on home improvements last year. These improvements can range from upgrading kitchens and bathrooms to replacing heating systems, roofs, or hot water tanks, to simply applying a fresh coat of paint.

Repairs and remodeling are essential aspects of homeownership. Similarly, it is essential to recognize the need to change our thinking. I like to refer to this process as "Renovating Your Mind," which aligns with a Biblical concept. Scripture teaches that to understand God's will and experience genuine transformation, we must renew our minds. Romans 12:1-2 states, "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will."

The twelfth chapter of Romans marks a shift from doctrinal teaching to practical application. Even if you attend theology training, church classes, or growth groups, neglecting the application of what you are learning will lead to no transformation. Thus, consider the Greek word in Romans 12:2 for "renewing": "anakaínōsis." This word translates to "renovation," indicating that we need to "renovate our thinking" to process Scripture and know God's will correctly. This process involves reassessing our attitudes, words, motivations, temptations, fears, and insecurities.

As you begin your day, take a moment to prayerfully ask the Holy Spirit to show you any areas of your thinking that may need renovation. Remember, before you can install new walls, countertops, lighting, appliances, or plumbing, you must first remove what is old and not functioning. Similarly, to fully embrace God's promises and plans, we need first to eliminate those counterproductive and potentially destructive thoughts.

Like a fresh coat of paint on a newly renovated house, your thoughts and, ultimately, your life will significantly transform as you put God's instruction to renew your mind into practice.

May God bless the renovation of your mind.
