Blessed Are Those Who Are Persecuted

Blessed Are Those Who Are Persecuted | July 3, 2026

Every year, salmon swim upstream against strong currents to return to their birthplace. While everything around them pushes them backward, they continue to move forward. The journey is challenging, but it is the only path to their destination.

As followers of Christ, we often find that living righteously requires us to go against the prevailing culture—choosing commitment over compromise, faith over fear, and humility over pride. These choices can lead to criticism and, in some cases, persecution. However, Jesus never promised that serving Him would be easy; He promised that it would be blessed.

In Matthew 5:10, Jesus said, "Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

If you face opposition while faithfully following Christ, don’t assume you are swimming in the wrong direction. Sometimes, resistance indicates that you are heading the right way. For example, take some of the gross overreaches in our culture today that attempt to redefine a child's identity. Regardless of your position, it is reckless and manipulative to use entertainment and education as avenues of indoctrination. Taking a stand represents someone willing to swim upstream.

Another example would be morality. Choosing to pursue a pure, self-controlled life rather than making immoral choices and living without boundaries is like swimming upstream in today's culture.

Having values and a worldview that agree with God's Word is a clear indication of what direction you are swimming.

Finally, even as a Christian, treating people right, being a person of grace, and extending the mercy God has shown you is swimming upstream in today's culture of manipulation and mean-spirited actions.

These are prime examples of the importance of faith here in America, but in many parts of the world, the situation is far more dangerous. Speaking the name of Jesus can land you in prison. Attending a church can lead to severe beatings, and refusing to deny your faith in Christ can result in death.

Understanding this, leverage the freedom you have here in America to stand firmly and respectfully on Scripture. Never shy away from your convictions in Christ. Additionally, remember that how we treat people matters to God and His kingdom plan.

Lastly, pray for those around the world who are on the front lines. When we are united in this way, we will experience the blessings of the Kingdom, just as Jesus promised!
