Blessed Are The Merciful

Blessed Are The Merciful | June 30, 2026

A young man who recently obtained his driver's license accidentally backed his car into his neighbor's brand-new fence, causing several thousand dollars in damage. Feeling embarrassed, he approached his neighbor to apologize and offered to make monthly payments until the damage was paid off.

The neighbor listened, smiled, and said, "I know you didn't do it on purpose. Don't worry about it—I'll take care of the repairs."

The young man was astonished. He never forgot that act of mercy, and years later, when someone wronged him, he found it much easier to extend the same kind of mercy he had received.

That’s the essence of mercy. It doesn’t overlook wrongdoing; instead, it chooses compassion over retaliation. It focuses on acting right over being right. Now, many will say they believe that, but their actions say otherwise.

Jesus teaches us that those who have received God's mercy should also extend mercy freely to others. A heart changed by God's mercy naturally shows mercy to others. For the genuine believer, mercy is your new default response. Likewise, anyone aspiring to serve in the church or in any ministry leadership capacity in a parachurch organization responds with mercy, not malice or mean-spirited retorts.

In the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus focused on that pathway to lasting and legitimate happiness, He said in Matthew 5:7, "Blessed are the merciful,  for they will be shown mercy."
God says that those who show mercy will be blessed with more mercy from Him and, most likely, from others.

Several years ago, a church member struggled to understand why God showed such incredible mercy to King David in the Old Testament, given the terrible sins he committed. In addition to God's inherent goodness, I believe the Lord knows our hearts and recognized David's remarkable acts of mercy toward King Saul and, later, his grandson Mephibosheth. David was indeed merciful, and as a result, he experienced even more of God's mercy.
Remember, mercy is offering to others what God has generously given to us. Therefore, stop giving just lip service and save your tears; reflect the heart of God by being merciful.

As stated in Luke 6:36, "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful."
