High Cost of Pride

High Cost of Pride | July 18, 2026

One of the most anticipated ships in history was the Titanic, which started its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912. Long before the era of social media and viral content, the Titanic had already earned an impressive reputation as the greatest ship ever built. Many referred to it as the "unsinkable" ship due to the overwhelming confidence in its design and technology.

However, on April 14, 1912, the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank, resulting in the loss of more than 1,500 lives.

Some historians believe that overconfidence may have contributed to a few dangerous decisions, such as not carrying enough lifeboats and ignoring several warnings about icebergs in the northern Atlantic waters.

Documentaries, the iconic movie, and those familiar with this story seem to reflect these thoughts because there is always a high price to pay when it comes to pride.
The tragedy of the Titanic serves as a reminder of the dangers of misplaced confidence, much like pride operates in our lives. It leads us to believe that we are strong enough on our own, wise enough to disregard correction, or secure enough without relying on God. Scripture warns us in Proverbs 16:18, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall."

Pride not only blinds us to our weaknesses, but it also obscures God's warnings. The safest place to live is in humble dependence on the Lord, not in self-confidence. Yes, we should be confident in the Lord's goodness and boast in Him; it is completely out of His Will to be prideful and think more highly of ourselves than we should.

To determine if you are at risk of hitting your own iceberg, consider the following questions: Are you ignoring the warning signs that God is sending you? Do you judge others? Do you look down on people? Do you think and act as if you are above the godly leaders in your life? Do you make decisions based on fear-mongering and human logic? If you answered yes to any of these questions, please know you are very close to encountering your own iceberg and potentially sinking yourself.

Scripture calls us to adopt an attitude of humility, reminding us of the significant dangers of ignoring God's warnings and failing to act wisely.

Remember, pride is costly, so remain humble and leave the results to God.
