God Goes Before You | August 27, 2026
When you start new chapters in your life, the transition can bring about feelings of uncertainty and insecurity. If you experience these feelings, it means you have a pulse and are in touch with your feelings. However, it's important to have this solid game plan: know and trust that God goes before you in your new surroundings.
That is precisely the counsel Moses gave to Joshua in Deuteronomy 31:8 when he said, "The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
In this pivotal moment recorded and preserved for us in the Old Testament, Moses is 120 years old, and his leadership is coming to an end. Israel is on the doorstep of the Promised Land; however, Moses will not be going with them. Instead, Joshua will lead the people into this next chapter of their journey. Moses essentially commissions Joshua as the new leader, reminding him that God goes before him in this significant new responsibility.
This counsel from Moses was timely because Joshua was going somewhere he had never been before to face situations that he had never faced before. To amplify any feelings of trepidation that Joshua might have felt, his trusted and steadfast leader and mentor, Moses, would not be with him. Therefore, Moses knew that Joshua would need reassurance.
Notice that his words are not mystical or filled with empty spiritual clichés. Instead, Moses shares one of the most important theological truths we can offer someone in any situation, especially when they are stepping into a new phase of life: "God goes before you."
Remember, Moses wasn't suggesting that God promised a life free of trouble, battles, mistakes, or problems—that would be misleading. Instead, he highlighted the truth of God's protection and provision, which comes from the Lord's presence. Likewise, you will have your share of struggles and experience stress, but don't let that stop you from seeing the promise of God's presence and His empowerment.
Joshua didn't need to know everything that awaited him on the other side of the Jordan because God was already waiting for him there.
We need to focus on the same truths from Scripture for ourselves or for those we know facing new beginnings, like Joshua.
God goes before you, and He will surely lead and provide for you.
