Focus On What God Says Instead Of What I See

Focus On What God Says Instead Of What I See | August 19, 2026

Life can be challenging, and it's easy to get caught up in that reality. Our attention often shifts directly to our problems. However, Scripture consistently reminds us through the Psalms, Proverbs, the New Testament parables, and His promises that God remains faithful, even when we may be faithless!

Therefore, a wise conviction to develop, especially in seasons of difficulty, is to "focus on what God says instead of what I see." We may see a battle, but God sees a victory. We may see an obstacle, but God sees an opportunity for growth. We may see fear, but God sees the possibility of great faith. We may see insurmountable odds, but God sees overwhelming strength. We may see our own limitations, but God sees His power working in our weakness.

The story of Gideon is a reminder to focus on what God says. Judges 6:14-18 says, "And the Lord turned to him and said, ‘Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?' 15 And he said to him, ‘Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father'shouse.'  And the Lord said to him, 'But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.’ 17 And he said to him, 'If now I have found favor in your eyes, then show me a sign that it is you who speak with me.18 Please do not depart from here until I come to you and bring out my present and set it before you.' And he said, I will wait until your return.'"
Gideon was fixated on his weaknesses—his family's limitations, his position within the family, and the adverse circumstances of his nation. He was essentially saying, "Look at who I am!" But God responded with, "I am with you." While Gideon saw himself as "the weakest link," God assured him, "I am with you." Gideon focused on all the reasons why he couldn't succeed, but God promised, "I will."

We must remember that faith does not mean denying what we see; rather, faith focuses on what God has said. The problems are real, but so is God. The challenges may feel overwhelming, but God is with us. We are weak, but God is strong. Adopting this mindset paves the way for God's peace to guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Knowing this, we should stand firm in who God is and what He says.
