Thank God It's Sunday (TGIS) | August 11th
You may be familiar with the famous catchphrase TGIF (Thank God It's Friday.) While the origins are debatable, the saying has become synonymous with relief in reaching the weekend. However, the weekends are only restful days for some. Employment obligations, volunteer responsibilities, youth sports, and those never-ending tasks around the house make for a busy weekend. Yet, despite the busyness, Sunday still provides a sense of solace and rest because that is the primary day for church.
Typically, Christians attend church on Sundays in celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. For example, in Acts 20:7, Luke recorded, "On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his speech until midnight." Also, in First Corinthians 16:2, Paul instructs on giving, "On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper so that there will be no collecting when I come." In both occurrences, the Bible refers to Sunday as the "first day of the week."
\While there is a clear indication that these New Testament authors are referring to Sunday, it's equally important to remember that going to church and participating in the various ways of giving and serving are commanded. Sunday is the primary day, but you can honor God by attending church whenever the doors are open. The main focus is that you are committed, and if your church offers services on the weekend, make it your business to be there regularly because that is what God expects of you. Some of us spend hours on extracurricular activities such as sports, hobbies, and the gym. Since God has given us salvation and the capacity to work, play, and enjoy life, it seems fitting that He should be a top priority in our schedule.
Remember, as you make church a regular part of your life, particularly on Sundays, calmness and peace will emerge. You will also develop spiritual muscles and find trustworthy friends. Knowing this, we can say, TGIS, Thank God It's Sunday!
Psalm 118:24 says, "This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it."
