Negativity Equals Toxicity
Negativity Equals Toxicity | August 7th
We are taught to avoid drinking water containing lead and certain chemicals. The reasoning behind the caution is that those things are toxic and can potentially lead to death!
Likewise, people can be so damaging that their attitudes and actions produce a toxic environment.
Thus, you want to avoid being a negative person because it can most certainly cause your relationships and, eventually, your reputation to become damaged. So, how do we keep our attitudes pure? Start with your thinking by confessing to God the shortcomings of your heart. The amplified version of Proverbs 23:7 says, "For as he thinks in his heart, so is he [in behavior—one who manipulates]. He says to you, 'Eat and drink,' Yet his heart is not with you [but it is begrudging the cost]." Negative and selfish thinking leads to toxic treatment of others. We need to get in a healthy and holy headspace so our actions are helpful, not harmful. Remember, we think negatively long before we act toxically.
So, confess any poisonous thoughts and focus on God's purposes. Secondly, make no excuses for having a toxic tongue and seek God's help. Proverbs 18:21 says, "The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences." When it comes to our words, we either build people up or tear them down. Profanity, insults, and unwholesome talk are toxic manners of communication. You must address any sign of poisonous talk to operate at a high level of excellence and proficiency with people. Given how difficult it might be to reign the tongue (see James 3,) we need to ask God for help.
Psalm 141:3, "Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips." With these steps in mind, seek to be the best version of yourself for God and others. Stop letting your misery become everyone's mess to clean up. God can restore your mind so you can be a blessing, not a burden. Think of it this way: There is enough evil in the world to go around, so don't contribute to the toxicity with your negativity.
