What To Do When You're Down

What To Do When You're Down | November 10, 2025
At times, life can be one trial after another. Troubles are inevitable, whether it's a medical struggle, financial stress, or relational strife. However, despite these hardships, God has equipped you to rise above adversity. Genesis 2:7 tells us that God has given each of His children a human spirit, which is the very breath of God that He breathed into humanity at the beginning of creation. The Bible tells us that this spirit, sometimes referred to as your heart, soul, or being, is indispensable in dealing with difficulties. Proverbs 18:14 explains this but adds a disclaimer concerning the human spirit, "A man's spirit will endure sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear?"
God has endowed you with a spirit that can bear many challenging circumstances, including illness; however, if your spirit is unwell, you will not be able to persevere through them. A "crushed spirit" means you are broken, greatly discouraged, or have lost your will and way. Thus, you become down in the dumps with no hope in sight!
So, what do you do when your spirit is crushed? First, consider why you may feel the way you do. It could have been one bad break after another. A constant storm will produce weariness and disheartenment. You may be in an intense season of temptation or lost in the valley of regret over wasted time and bad decisions. Another potential cause is that you have deserted God, forsaken your spiritual responsibilities, and you're living selfishly. Whatever the reason, it will be essential to identify the cause so that you can apply God's promises accordingly.
Psalm 34:18 says, "The LORD is close to the brokenhearted, and he saves those whose spirits have been crushed."
God stands ready to help, but we must be honest about our struggles. Then, we must trust
God, pray, believe His promises, make necessary changes, and wait on His provisions.
