Our Secrets Make Us Sick
Our Secrets Make Us Sick | September 5, 2025
Medical studies indicate that various factors can contribute to illness. These factors include Infectious Pathogens, which are harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and prions. Secondly, lifestyle choices such as poor nutrition, substance abuse, poor sleep habits, inactivity, and, of course, chronic stress. Thirdly, Environmental factors like air pollution, water contamination, toxic chemicals, and radiation. Finally, genetics can contribute to a lack of well-being because of chromosomal and single-gene disorders.
One additional factor that can contribute to illness, which is not often mentioned, is the act of keeping secrets. Research in both behavioral and medical fields indicates that holding onto secrets can negatively affect physical health. This can lead to various issues, including cardiovascular problems, a weakened immune system, heightened stress levels, hormonal imbalances, worsening of existing conditions, and gastrointestinal distress. Similarly, your mental health can be compromised by keeping secrets. For example, holding secrets can increase anxiety, lead to depression, create mood disorders, cause additional stress, and create the urge to isolate.
These medical realities become even more likely if those secrets are sinful. If you are hiding an unhealthy and immoral habit, you will either become filled with guilt or, if it is not addressed over time, become so desensitized that you slip into a state of apathy. In either case, keeping sinful secrets can be detrimental to your well-being.
With this in mind, keep short accounts with God by being quick to confess any past transgressions and potential secrets that would be deemed sinful. Proverbs 28:13 says, "Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy."
In my experience of talking with people and listening to their stories and secret struggles, I've noticed a pattern: when they confess their secrets, they often feel a sense of relief and begin their journey toward healing and holiness. Therefore, I encourage you to share your secrets with the Lord, and if needed, seek guidance from a trusted pastor or friend. You will never regret being open with the Lord because He already knows what we are going through and is ready to help.
First John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
