Kindness Counts

Kindness Counts | June 26, 2025

Here in New York, public schools are officially out for the summer, beginning at dismissal today. This past year, I have had the opportunity to substitute teach in Middle School on my days off and can personally attest that the excitement of school ending is a real and tangible feeling.
I can also say that one of the most underrated qualities, which often does not receive enough recognition whether it be on evaulations for teachers or report cards and promotion cermonies for students, is kindness. I have witnessed faculty and students alike show this vital character quality, and it certainly is a gamechanger, especially these days!

Another reminder for me has been my son, Benjamin. Earlier this week, he graduated from 5th grade (which is still hard to swallow), and we couldn't be more proud of him. In addition to being a smart and intuitive young man, he is arguably the kindest kid in the school, according to other parents. Having coached Ben, he possess a rare quality of being happy for others, while still being content with himself. He treats those around him, especially teachers and coaches with respect. He doesn't bully his peers but instead is an encouraging friend to everyone.
While these actions sometimes get overlooked by society and institutions like schools, God sees it and in due time, will reward it.

Proverbs 11:17 says, "Your kindness will reward you, but your cruelty will destroy you."

According to the wisdom of this verse, kindness counts in God's kingdom and He will be faithful to bless those that live out this important quality regardless of people see it our not. Furthermore, failing to be kind dimishes our overall character and can put us on a path of being cruel which can potentially ruin our reputation.
With this in mind, continue to be kind and leave the results to God. He is fully aware of you and your kind actions. In due time, His blessings will be revealed through increased trust and greater opportunities.
May God bless all of the students and teachers who are done with school already and those that are finishing up today with a safe and restful summer.
