Faithfulness And Flag Day
Faithfulness And Flag Day
On this date in 1777, the United States flag was officially adopted through a resolution passed by the Second Continental Congress. Later, in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing June 14 as Flag Day.
The driving force behind Flag Day was to promote unity. Therefore, it is deeply troubling to see riots in the streets of major US Citites where people wave foreign flags in support of illegal criminals being labeled as peaceful protests. Attacking first responders, destroying public and private property, committing acts of violence, and illegally occupying city streets is the polar opposite of what our flag and country stand for. While America has been largely labeled a nation of immigrants, we must remember that those individuals migrated here legally and held respect for our flag, not contempt.
As believers, we must remember that we are God's representatives regardless of the present day drama we see on the news. Instead of getting sucked into the narratives that media wants us to swallow, we need focus on verses like Second Corinthians 5:20 which says, "We are, therefore, Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God."And Philippians 3:20 adds, "But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ."
Understanding this, we can engage with political parties and group agendas without becoming overly obsessed. Sometimes, patriotism is confused with blind support for a particular faction or party. To maintain perspective, we should remember that we are ambassadors for God during our time here on Earth, keeping in mind that our true home is in heaven. Such an outlook reflects a person who is steadfast in their faith and aware of the values the American flag represents—a unity that calls for both appreciation and active participation.
In light of our current challenges, let us thank God for our nation and commit to being faithful by honoring the Lord and helping others.
