Be Wise With Your Words

Be Wise With Your Words | November 19th

In his literary work, Pearls from Many Seas, T.J. Bach said,

"A careless word may kindle strife,
A cruel word may wreck a life,
A bitter word may hate instill,
A brutal word may smite and kill,
A gracious word may smooth the way,
A joyous word may light the day,
A timely word may lessen stress,
A loving word may heal and bless."

When it comes to your words, you do have a choice. You can be a blessing or a burden, a person of peace, or someone who inflicts pain. You can encourage or discourage people. The decision is entirely up to you, but remember, immense power is attached to your words. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit."

Your words can infuse life into people. However, they also possess the power to pull people down. Thus, you must diligently guard your words because you will ultimately reap what you speak. If you speak words of ignorance and insults, you can expect others to distrust you. If you are profane or unprofessional, you will lose credibility. More importantly, being reckless with your words is a direct step of disobedience toward God. Repeatedly, God counsels you and me to guard the words we speak. Proverbs 13:3 says, "He who guards his mouth protects his life, but the one who opens his lips invites his own ruin."
Guarding your mouth will help you to be wise with your words. You will also position yourself to bless others. Sadly, there is enough negativity to go around the world several times over. Thus, the discipline of showing wisdom with your words is needed. In the bigger picture, practicing this perspective honors God. Therefore, refuse to be careless with your comments, and seek to represent the Lord whenever you open your mouth.
