Lesson 1: What is an Addiction?

Step 1: We admitted we were powerless—that our lives had become unmanageable.
Step 2: Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

Key Verse:

1 Corinthians 6:12 NIV | “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything.

Lesson 2: Surrendering our will to God’s Will.

Step 3: Decided to turn our will and our lives over to Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.

Key verses:

James 4:10 NIV | Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

1 Peter 5:6 ESV | Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Lesson 3: Becoming a New Creation

Step 4: Take a moral inventory of ourselves, listing strengths and weaknesses

Step 5: Confess to God, to ourselves, and to another person the nature of our wrongs.

Step 6: Decide if we are ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

Step 7: Humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings.

Key verses:

Psalm 139:23-24 | Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.

1 John 1:7-9 | But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

Lesson 4: Forgiveness

Step 8: Make a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

Step 9: Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

Key verse:

Romans 12:18-21 NIV | If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will hear burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.

Lesson 5 Self Awareness

Step 10: Continued to take personal inventories and when we are wrong, we promptly admit it.

Key verse:

Philippians 2:12-13 NIV | Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. 13 For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.

Lesson 6: How to Maintain a Healthy Prayer Life

Step 11: Through prayer and Worship we create a relationship with God, praying for God’s will in our life and the ability to let God’s will be done in our life.

Key verses:

Philippians 4:6-7 NIV | Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Hebrews 4:16 NIV | Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Romans 12:2 NIV | Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Lesson 7 Being Productive for Christ

Step 12: Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to others who are still suffering and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Key verse:

1 Corinthians 1:6-7 NIV | Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

Lesson 8 How to Maintain a Healthy Relationship with God

Key verses:

Romans 8:37-39 NKJV | Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:28 NKJV 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Hebrews 10:38-19 NLV 38 For the one right with God lives by faith. If anyone turns back, I will not be pleased with him.” 39 We are not of those people who turn back and are lost. Instead, we have faith to be saved from the punishment of sin.
