Hurricane Harvey has made multiple landfalls, causing unprecedented flooding and catastrophic damage in the southern region of Texas. According to the Washington Post, meteorologist have estimated that at least 9 trillion gallons of water have been produced by this storm and an additional 5-10 trillion gallons may be expected before Harvey final subsides.
Considering the disastrous effects this has had on Texas we have begun to plan for a response based on our own relief experience with Hurricane Sandy back in 2012. In the immediate picture, there will be a big rush of supplies, volunteers, and media attention in Houston. However, when the news cycle changes, so will the focus; but the rebuilding and needs will still be there.
Our goal is to prayerful see how we can best be used for the relief efforts.
Through our partnerships with Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBDR), Samaritan’s Purse, and First Baptist Church Lake Jackson, Texas we will be doing the following as a church family here in Staten Island:
We continue to lift up those affected by Hurricane Harvey as well as those who are a part of the relief effort. In speaking with Southern Baptist Disaster Relief, they have shared six prayer requests that you can continue to lift up in prayer:
1. That God will provide crew chiefs
2. That God will provide additional leaders for project management
3. That equipment and resources would arrive safely when called upon
4. That God would provide adequate funding for the relief effort
5. That SBDR Leader Mickey Caison or the leadership team would not grow weary or discouraged
6. That God would provide encouragement and support for those affected by this disaster
We are not collecting donations at this time as we are in the process of developing a proper list with Southern Baptist Disaster Relief to ensure any collected supplies are what are most needed. Early reports indicate toiletry items will be what is needed; and we will not be collecting clothes at any time. Once we have a true list we will make that information known here as well as on our Crossroads Church Social Media Channels
